Titled: Leaving Winter Behind and Exploring the Windward Islands: Each Winter, except during pandemics, Advantage Boating heads down to the Caribbean with a group of enthusiastic sailors to escape winter by offering a variety of sailing vacations.
Grab yourself a beverage and join Ron & Doris for an informative and entertaining presentation about sailing from beach to beach through the Windward Islands.
Having sailed almost all of the Caribbean islands from the BVIs to Grenada, Advantage Boating’s most recent trip occurred during the winter of 2020 in the Windward Islands between Martinique and Grenada where they experienced fantastic sailing conditions, incredible scenery, lost treasure and selfies with turtles.
Plus, as an added bonus…… they’ll show you why you don’t want to go overboard while sailing at night in big wind and waves.
Ron was introduced to sailing by his parents at the ripe old age of 9 where he quickly fell in love with the sport, taking advantage of any opportunity he could to get out on the water. Today Ron Schute is the very proud owner of Ottawa based Advantage Boating, with the sailing school soon to celebrate its 30th anniversary. The company has come a long way: growing into Canada’s top adult sailing school.
When not working at the school, you’ll find Ron racing on a Shark, J22 or Viper, locally and in foreign waters or cruising around Lake Ontario during the summer and in the Caribbean during the winter looking for hidden treasure.
Doris learned how to sail in a Laser II dinghy with her family and some very supportive and keen sailors at Ottawa’s Lac Deschenes Sailing Club. This is where her love of racing sailboats began. It wasn’t long afterwards that her family discovered racing, where she continued developing her passion for sailing while cruising and racing on the family’s Tanzer 26 at Nepean Sailing Club. Since those early days Doris has raced on any boat that she could step foot upon and at competitions at the Local, National and International levels.
It was at Nepean Sailing Club that Doris also first started teaching adults and youth sailing as part of “Sail Nepean” (NSC’s dinghy program). She’s been involved with teaching sailing now for over 30 years.
