Dave relates an interesting journey of learning to solo sail, fundraise and how to perform a solo rescue of a sailor.
Amid COVID in 2020, Nepean Sailing Club member David Morralee embarked on a solo sail for a six-day 300 km adventure on the Ottawa River he dubbed “SOLO300”. Dave had done some solo sailing before but nothing like this! On the one hand, solo sailing is not as hard as one might think. On the other hand, this was – well, there are certain aspects you want to prepare for!
Dave’s drive to succeed spending six days alone was a long-standing partnership with Camp Trillium (now Campfire Circle) to raise funds for kids with cancer: $8,500 in 2020. Last season he did the SOLO300 again, but this time, had another 10 sailors join him with their own sailboats!
Dave started sailing at 8 years old on the Ottawa River in Deep River. He went through the sailing school in Cadets and Mirror dinghies. In his teens and early 20s he raced Laser, 505 and Hobie 18. Moving to Thunder Bay, he did a little racing with Lightnings. He has crewed on a C&C 30 and has spent the last 10 years skippering his own Tanzer 29 in Ottawa. Morralee has volunteered and fundraised for the last 20 years for Camp Trillium (Campfire Circle), creating 18 fundraising events!
David is a member of the Nepean Sailing Club.
