A DOUBLE Presentation to launch the 2018 Winter Series Presentations brought to you by Emma Moxley & Eileen Scatterty: Sailing the Greek Islands & Turkey on a 12 Passenger Gulet:
1. A wonderful photogenic presentation of a Greek Island trip on a full service wooden traditional sailing vessel.
2. The stories of the presenters who successfully made the transition from senior high tech careers to sailing businesses.
A very photogenic presentation by 2 “high tech refugees” of a very affordable week long trip on the luxurious traditionally styled 2 masted wooden sailing vessel MedSea ES CANADA, visiting historical Greek islands off the mass tourist track and a fascinating port in Turkey. Features included a captain and crew, epicurean Mediterranean feasts prepared by a chef & accompanied by local wines and beers, spacious luxury cabins with large private bathrooms, water toys including kayaks (and water skiing behind a 100 hp dinghy), a large deck permitting sleeping outside at night, and participation of passengers in sailing the vessel if they wished.
Emma is very sensitive to seasickness yet had no problems on the Gulet. Gulets are typically wooden vessels of 45 to 100 feet with 2 or 3 masts, usually designed for a maximum of 12 passengers with some larger boats carrying up to 16. Gulet sailboats provide an intimate sailing experience with more frills and comfort than a bareboat charter on a monohull or cat, with no liability for fuel spills, groundings, hull damage from docking, stolen dinghies etc., and with a crew possessing intimate local navigation knowledge.
This was Ottawa-born Emma’s first sailing experience, although her marine experience includes owning a 28 foot cabin cruiser that navigated the Rideau Canal, vacationing on a narrow canal boat in Wales, and a European river cruise. However the “Gulet” sailing trip has “hooked” Emma and she is now planning a sailing trip in Croatia, will be crewing (experimentally) in a women’s sailboat race and on the Race Committee Boat this coming season, and is now taking her travel business in a sailing vacation direction. Emma will have to “trial” these sailing vacations to ensure they are suitable for her clients ! Switching from a long career at Entrust as a Business Development Manager to personal vacation planning has its traveling perks…
Eileen, originally from Calgary and VP of technology in a North American firm, entered the sailing business in 2012 and now co-owns 2 Gulets with her partner Cengiz, including MedSea ES CANADA & MedSea AEGEAN. Eileen will tell us about the ups & downs of “living the sailing dream” that entrances so many of us.
The kitchen opens at 5.00 pm, and the presentation will start at 7:30 p.m. Check the Galley menu for specials. Members of all local sailing clubs obtain a discount on food purchases by showing a valid club membership card. Attendees are asked to make a donation to support the NSC Legacy fund.
Join us also on Wednesday January 17 for a very special presentation by educator, environmentalist and social entrepreneur, Geoffrey Green C.M. Geoff will present highlights of his most recent adventure as founder and leader of the Canada C3 expedition: a 150-day, 25,000 km sailing journey around Canada’s coastline to celebrate Canada’s 150th Anniversary of Confederation.
