Theme of Tig’s talk: “The Southern Ocean. What’s all the fuss about?”. Starting with an in depth look at the Falkland Islands, and continuing with the sailing adventure itself and lessons learned.
Tig Shafto took advantage of an opportunity to cruise the Falkland Islands and sail across the South Atlantic from there to Cape Town in the spring of 2018. In his mix of photos and videos he will show the unique geography, the different wildlife, and some of the history of the Falklands.
But this is mostly a sailing presentation, and many informative and sometimes amusing anecdotes are featured, dealing with what is vital in a sound blue-water boat, and the highs and lows of a three-week ocean crossing with weather issues and an eclectic crew.
Before Tig got seriously bitten by the ocean sailing bug, he was a 20-year member of NSC. He was active in club racing with both his Mirage 25 “Manatee” (with gratifying success), and later with a co-owned C&C 27 “Escape” in the competitive C&C fleet (with rather more “mixed” results). And he has no idea yet what his next sailing foray will be…
The kitchen opens at 5.00 pm, and the presentation will start at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday is Steak Night. Members of all local sailing clubs obtain a discount on food purchases by showing a valid club membership card. Attendees are asked to make a donation to support the NSC Legacy fund.
The speaker series continues weekly until April 17. Please see the Winter Speaker page for details.
