If you enjoy surprises, learning by experience, and don’t mind sailing the wrong course or being scored DNF, then do NOT read this year’s version of the Sailing Instructions, as that would ruin your fun! Join other racers and try to guess what changes might have been introduced since last year, what course you should be sailing and what start is yours. For those who like to gamble, the odds are great in this game of luck! You’ve got about a 50-50 chance of being scored, which is definitely better odds that you’ll get at the track.

The Ice Breaker series starts May 8th, there is a practice race for the Women on May 14th, and the regular Spring Series are scheduled to start May 15th. If the BYC gates are not out by then, the Ice Breaker Series will continue until the BYC gates are removed. See Part G of the SIs for more info.

2017 Second Wording:

There’s an old joke that goes, “How do you keep a secret from racers?” “Put it in the Sailing Instructions.” Nowhere does that seem to be more true than in Ottawa! The 2017 Sailing Instructions were published on NSC’s website back in April, along with a list of the major changes, but one would think the information contained therein were classified secrets, known only to a privileged few.
