Is your aging saildrive-equipped engine becoming a concern? Replacing one can run into significant expense. But how about replacing it with an electric motor for under $1000? Come and meet someone in Ottawa who did just that on his 30ft sailboat. A special guest at Fraser Robidoux’s upcoming talk on March 23 is Regent Mayer from Rockliffe Yacht Club. He will be available after Fraser’s talk “Engine replacement or rebuild” for a one-on-one chat. Here is his story:
“In the Fall with the boat out we removed the engine and saildrive unit , we checked out the saildrive and found it in great condition, I bought the motor and controller etc. etc. from Sailcraft in Ottawa, when it arrived we constructed an adapter to mate the two. We then did shop tests until Spring. We decided to go with a 36 volt system to match the same power ratio as the original gas motor, then installed the complete unit in the boat.
