Ten sailors from NSC travelled to Sakonnet Point, Little Compton, RI, to compete in the 2023 East Coast Championship 25-27 August:
- Andrew Gesing
- Shona Moss/Steve Lovshin
- Christian Voyer/Luke Strickland
- Marie Gendron/David Brown
- Paul Place
- David Mincoff/Phil Doucet
Sailed off beautiful Sakonnet Point, the venue is direct ocean access with vistas and ocean rollers. A total of twenty-six 505s travelled from as far as Toronto, North Carolina and even California to participate with a strong contingent of 11 teams from Canada.
With three days planned for the event, the first day was unfortunately a blowout with 25 to 30-knot winds and large seas. Several teams went out to sail, but the consensus was it was too much to race. Day two brought light southeast winds with large left over rollers and overlaid chop. Robert Bartlewski (Toronto) and Adam Gesing (NSC) were a strong second with a pair of thirds. Jeff Boyd and Martin Ten Hove from Kingston YC managed a 7th and a second in the difficult sailing conditions. Consistency would prove to be important, and it was difficult to achieve with the shifts and pressure variations.
Sunday brought a welcome, fresh northeast breeze, shifty, but starting at least with full trapezing conditions. Four races were completed, the first three in wire run conditions the last in a bit less. Three NSC teams managed top 10 finishes that day: Shona Moss/Steve Lovshin, Christian Voyer/Luke Strickland and Marie Gendron/David Brown.
NSC’s Andrew Gesing with Toronto’s skipper Rober Bartlewski were the top Canadian team in 7th place. The top full NSC team was Shona Moss and Steve Lovshin in 13th.
Congratulations to Craig Thompson and Adam Wolnikowski (USA) for an outstanding series and a good warmup for Worlds. Huge thanks to John Ingalls for organizing the regatta, to PRO Cushing Anderson and to the many other volunteers and especially the housing hosts. John placed 20+ people (including 8 NSC sailors) in homes in Little Compton, no small feat.
