Job Title:                    Race Bosuns (Head, Regular, Junior)

 

Positions:                   3 positions available, including Head, Regular and Junior (according to qualifications and experience.)

 

Availability:               Part time weekday evenings (4 pm-9 pm), and some weekends

 

Dates:                         Some Training and Preparatory work in March-April, and early May. Shutdown work in late October, Regular racing season runs May 8th to Mid-October.

 

Pay range:                  This is a limited contract opportunity. Pay is $10.25-$14/hour, 20-30 hours a week.

 

Position Summary:   Race Bosuns act as Principal Race Officers and Marksetters for weeknight and some weekend events, running competitive sailing and maintenance of race equipment for the Nepean Sailing Club (NSC). This is an excellent opportunity for a reliable and responsible individual with sailing and racing experience.  Excellent opportunities for training in race management, motor boat handling, VHF operation and more. You will play an important part in the racing scene on Lac Deschenes.

 

Reporting:                  The Head Race bosun reports to the Fleet Captain or other designate, and other Race Bosuns report to the Head Race Bosun.

 

Duties include:           Race Bosuns acting as Principal Race Officer are responsible for the overall management and quality of on-the-water racing, which includes the responsibility to:

  • Run professional races that maximize the opportunity for enjoyable and fair racing by Lac Deschenes competitors.
  • Apply the NSC’s Volunteer Race committee system.
  • Work with volunteers, competitors and other Club Race Officers in a polite and professional manner
  • Maintain Equipment Inventory:  Ensure that committee boats are properly equipped and gear is maintained and stored properly.
  • Operate boats safely using common sense and training.
  • Perform other duties as directed.

 

Race Bosuns acting as Marksetters are responsible for ensuring the quality of mark setting for on-the-water racing, which includes the responsibility to:

  • Operate boats and perform mark set duties safely, promptly, securely and according to direction from the Principal Race Officer.
  • Support the maintenance and inventory of equipment.
  • Work with Volunteer assistants in a polite and professional manner.
  • Perform other related duties as directed.

 

Head Bosuns have additional responsibility of reporting to the Fleet Captain and ensuring the performance and professionalism of other Race Bosuns.

 

Minimum Qualifications (Training opportunities are available):

  • Pleasure Craft Operator Card,
  • VHF Radio operator’s certificate,
  • Standard First Aid and CPR
  • One Day NSC Practical Orientation Day for Race Bosuns (mandatory annually)
  • Canadian Yachting Association Race Officer Level 1
  • Demonstrated Knowledge of the Racing Rules of Sailing
  • Demonstrated Knowledge of the NSC Sailing Instructions

 

Additional Qualifications :

  • CYA Silver Sail Level VI
  • Lifesaving Society Boat Rescue Course
  • Canadian Yachting Association Race Officer Level 2
  • NSC Sailwave Scoring Seminar
  • NSC Regatta Management Seminar
  • Previous Experience as a Race Officer
