Your story is important!
We host some amazing events at NSC, but sometimes we forget to tell our stories! “Reporting” is important. Telling our stories at NSC helps us be better known, makes what we do memorable, and helps us in our understanding of ourselves. Story telling opens a window for people to look through. They find out not just what we do but how we do it, and sometimes the window even leads to a door that people step through to get involved.
If we told our story as well as we promoted events in the lead-up to them, we would increase our impact. But sometimes after a major event or regatta, we move on so quickly to other things that we miss a wonderful opportunity to share the experience with our community so they can experience something of it or even relive it.
So please tell your story, and others’ stories
With all that in mind, all event organizers and regatta chairs are asked to write an article – or have someone write an article – about the event.
As you report on events, consider asking participants what they experienced and include that in your report, because stories create an emotional connection, helping us gain a deeper understanding of other people’s experiences.
On the technical side:
In many cases, a part of the article – e.g. the logistics – could be written before the event, and the details added over the course of the event. Ideally, it would be great to get such reports up immediately following an event while the promotion is still fresh in NSC minds. So starting early can help.
On nsc.ca, once an event has happened, posts announcing that upcoming event are “expired” i.e. made invisible on the news page, so web searches outside nsc.ca don’t pick them up. Expired events are still on nsc.ca, and a search there will find them.
We can also write posts ahead of time and define when they will be posted. This could be useful for adding a link to regatta results, for example, if we know the URL for the results in advance.
In most cases, event reports should also be linked to in the Telltale.
As an example of previous such reports, see the 2012 NOD regatta report by Ross Ernst, also posted on Sail-World.com. Mike Roper also wrote a great one for the 2023 Moonlit Frostbite: Racing in the Twilight Zone which is posted on this page.
Please send event reports to Webmaster@nsc.ca and one of the webmasters will ensure that it gets posted.
