Box.com is the Cloud storage system that NSC uses for saving NSC’s non-html files and documents. Box has a powerful “version” feature that retains the most recent 20 versions of a file under the same document name, so there is no need to save old files with a different name. Another advantage of this version feature is that the link to that file in Box remains the same, even when the file gets updated.

For example, NSC’s pdf registration form is saved in Box at https://nsc.ca/nsc_racing/registration/registration.pdf (or you can see it in the Box viewer at https://app.box.com/s/7o5sbghsq70vxcz8f8bylhemnngi7rrz). Both of those links point to the latest version of the registration form (Version 5, dated 2021-05-24, as of 2023-05-28). However, earlier versions of that registration form, dating back to 2016, are saved within Box under the same file name.

To use this feature, filenames should not be date specific. E.g., use a filename of registration.pdf, instead of registration-2021-05-24.pdf, for the Registration form that might only get updated every few years. Or use a filename of registrations-2023.xlsm, instead of registrations-2023-05-28.xlsm, for the spreadsheet of 2023 race registrants that gets updated weekly.

The simplest means to upload a new version of a file is, within Box.com, click on the “New +” box in the top-right corner. If a file with the exact same name as the one you are uploading already exists in that Box folder, then it will automatically be uploaded as a new version. All links to that file, including people’s bookmarks, now point to the latest version.

If you wish to view an old version of the file, again navigate to the folder in Box that contains that file, click on the same “…” to the right of the filename, and select “Properties”, then “Version History”.
