Ian will share the richness and challenges of his and Michelle’s transition from full-time jobs to being full time live-aboard nomads, while imparting a few observations and lessons learned along the way. As the backbone of the presentation, you’ll see the results of Michelle’s craft as a photographer, while Ian gives voice to their life transition.

Ian and Michelle Torrie joined NSC in 2003. Ian has sailed his whole life and has been a sailmaker and professional yacht race crew before getting a real job as a military physician. Michelle was hatched in St John’s NL and brings the humour that can only come from living on a craggy rock in the North Atlantic.  She was a project manager and specialized in disaster recovery, an important talent when married to Ian, he says!  She started sailing as an adult, racing in Conception Bay.  Sailing has remained a big part of their lives and has opened many doors for them wherever they’ve pitched.

After Ian’s 28-year military career and Michelle’s stressful contract work, the time was right to take up a new adventure. The Torries have been living aboard for three years now. They’ve been up and down the US east coast from Maine to the Bahamas twice and had planned to cross the Atlantic when scuppered by COVID.

Ian and Michelle will take us along on the journey of getting the bug through to completion of their first year on board. This high-level photo journey will follow buying and preparing the boat and then moving onto their travels to Maine and the Bahamas to highlight various aspects of living aboard. They have struck a balance to avoid either a travelogue or going down technical rabbit-holes, but still including salient, actionable take-aways.

Maybe you’ll picture yourself doing something like this. Maybe the less keen half of a couple might be a wee bit more enticed, while the “leading” spouse gleans some useful information as well.
