The Ottawa Fire Service Ice/Water rescue team has specialized equipment and training, and are designated first responders on the Ottawa River, and other bodies of water within the city boundaries.

They have been involved in numerous rescues of all kinds, whether it be a capsized sailboat, watercraft caught on the rapids, or people in distress spotted in the water or fallen through the ice. Members of the team will explain how best to interact with them if you find yourself in an emergency situation on the water, or spot someone else in distress.

Many of us may have learned in our training how to call the Coast Guard for help. But on our river Coast Guard is neither equipped nor mandated to provide immediate assistance. This mandate goes to Ottawa Fire.  They will walk through some recent examples of rescues to illustrate how they respond, and how appropriate interaction can facilitate the rescue.

They will emphasize prevention: the importance of good safety practices. You will often see them out on the water, training with their equipment. This is a great opportunity to meet them and ask questions.  For example, what happens if you are on the Quebec side of the river?

The Galley will open at 5 pm, so come early for supper and drinks, and then stay for the presentation which starts at 7.30 pm. The Galley will have a $12 special on a soup, sandwich and choice of salad or fries, as well as a regular menu. (15% discount for a member of any local club).

All are welcome, and there is no fee for admission. We will merely request a small voluntary contribution to the Legacy Fund (supporting youth sailors).

On March 18 Peter Huszcz (The Mobile Mechanic), Scott Hayley  and Denis Pouliot  will speak about maintaining your boat. They will be introduced by our Vice Commodore and harbourmaster David Neasmith.
