Eric Hill returns to Ottawa March 23-24 to again present his World Sailing-approved Offshore Personal Survival course. This is the same course that NSC hosted in 2014 (see Jacques Adam’s report), and that BYC hosted in 2016 & 2018. In 2019, it will again be hosted at Britannia Yacht Club, 2777 Cassels Street, Ottawa.
This two-day, intensive classroom course is open to cruisers and racers. No prerequisite qualifications or sailing experience required. Class size is limited to 14 students. Topics include heavy weather seamanship, damage control, ship abandonment, survival at sea, and much, much more.
Practical skills training includes deploying handheld distress flares, and a two-hour pool session covering liferaft deployment and boarding, and other drills.
Those completing the course receive a World Sailing Personal Offshore Safety Certificate, valid for 5 years. This certificate is a prerequisite for many offshore races.
