How to decide whether a boat you are considering buying is worth the money?  A pleasure to own or a problem-filled money pit? If you are selling, are you wondering what a surveyor might look for? Or maybe the insurance survey is coming due… This session with Barry Lovett might just have the answers you are looking for!

Barry Lovett has been surveying boats for 30 years. He was born and raised in Dartmouth Nova Scotia.  Sailed, scraped, caulked and painted his uncle’s 38 foot schooner and helped rig it on a bosuns chair from the age of 12 through 20.

Barry has been messing with boats almost all his life. Other than surveying, Barry has been a marina owner for 5 years, he has captained three different yachts from Florida to the Thousand Islands. He has also been a boat owner for over 41 years.

This presentation will include why surveys are required and will cover the three different types of surveys. He will discuss the different ages or times when a survey may be required. The value of used boats in Canada, most particularly in Ontario. And of course the crazy cost of new boats.

Barry is expecting  plenty of questions from the floor. So please come prepared and don’t be shy!

The kitchen opens at 5.00 pm, and the presentation will start at 7:30 p.m.  Wednesday is Steak Night. Members of all local sailing clubs obtain a discount on food purchases by showing a valid club membership card. Attendees are asked to make a donation to support the NSC Legacy fund.

The speaker series continues weekly until April 17. Please see the Winter Speaker page for details.
