With sun pouring through our windows on the 2nd floor, the “vibe” at the NSC bar last Thursday afternoon felt more like Spring was a possibility.  Well, “Spring” in the Ottawa-sense.  Which means +5degC and a frozen harbour.  Still, its close.  Time for a quick update from your Board of Directors.

Docks….

NSC members rise to a challenge.  600 hours of volunteer work by approximately 120 people across 4 days to strip the tops from D and E docks and deliver lumber for the reconstruction.  Thank you for the help and for the amazing turnout – especially on some chilly days.  The project is a well-planned experiment to determine the fastest, lowest impact and financially efficient way to rebuild 40,000 square feet of dock.  That’s a lot of dock.

Fridge…

A constraint at the NSC Galley has been cold storage space. Fixed. We have just approved a walk-in freezer for the Galley that will be installed in the very South-East corner of the deck, near the old location for our BBQ and close to the kitchen. If you’re curious about the “new” location for the BBQ, think of it near the gate to the main docks, say near the Blue Tent. Grilled goodies, sandwiches, beer and ice just before a race or just after a race. Sound good?

Boats…

Did you know?… that NSC & Britannia jointly run the most races, with the most sailors, of any Canadian sailing club? No other club races 4 nights a week. We have regattas and a long-distance weekend series too! (See post from your Fleet Captain)

Did you know?… that a large portion of that racing program relies on an aging Race Committee boat that is increasingly “grumpy” when it comes to maintenance?  Fixed.  We just took delivery of a great new RC platform in the shape of sleek, 225HP centre console boat.  Now, along with the Vice markset and Andy Haydon RC boats, the risk of losing a race night or regatta to mechanical problems is significantly lower.

Race Staff…

Happy to announce that NSC has a new head race bosun, John Gardner.  John is a familiar face at NSC and is experienced with setting many race courses.  Our head race bosun of several years, Wynn Davies, has handed on his knowledge and plans to do more sailing.  Many thanks for all the years of racing Wynn!

Upcoming Season…

Spring 2018 is the first year that NSC has been able to produce electronic statements for Membership and Mooring fees directly from our accounting system.  So far so good: we have 84% of our 2018 membership revenues and 92% of our mooring revenues accounted for….Please let the Office know if you are having any issues.

Dropping Fees…

This is my sixth year on the Board of Directors and the first time that I’ve seen an NSC fee lowered.  Thanks to Harbourmaster Michael Hoffman’s diligence, Club Launch and Haul Fees are going down in 2018 and, could drop even further if more of you considered using it.  Lots of help to Launch and Haul can be a good thing.

Next Up…

THRASH is coming April 28th, a quick two days after the annual Spring Information Meeting and Member Mixer on Thursday April 26th….invites will follow shortly.

On behalf of the Board, I invite your feedback and suggestions: commodore at nsc.ca.
